Catherine White

Catherine takes great pleasure in sharing in a concert setting the beauty and passion that the harp can create. Whether as a solo instrument or in a chamber group, she regards the opportunity to communicate directly with the audience as the highest calling.

Audiences universally are amazed and thrilled at the response they experience when given the chance to hear one of Catherine’s performances., which have been described as “an epiphany” and “a revelation”. Whilst many people are not acquainted with the harp’s repertoire, when they do have the chance to experience one of Catherine’s concerts, they are usually surprised at how much they enjoy these unfamiliar but engaging and rewarding works. Catherine makes a point of always speaking with the audience as well, answering questions about the harp, telling anecdotes and giving insights into the music she plays. She especially enjoys the intimate concert situation that is appropriate for a harp recital, and also relishes the chance to share her music through community outreach and education programmes.

Prior to settling in the UK, Catherine concertised extensively in solo and chamber music concerts throughout her native USA and Canada, including Carnegie Recital Hall. Solo and chamber engagements in this country have included presenting the premiere of Sean Davey’s Concerto for Two Harps at the Belfast Festival and performing at numerous Festivals including Buxton, Bury St Edmunds, Chipping Camden and Cerne Abbas. She has performed with many outstanding colleagues including the Gaudier Ensemble, flautists Phillippa Davies and Diane Clark, and violist Robin Ireland, formerly with the Lindsay String Quartet. Broadcasts for radio and television include the BBC, Czech National Television and National Public Radio (USA).

Catherine earned her Master Of Music Degree from the Juilliard School in New York and her Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She was a major prize-winner in the American Harp Society National Competition. She now teaches at the Royal Academy of Music and the Birmingham Conservatoire.

Catherine has recorded a solo album, Bouquet for Harp, which includes Debussy - Clair de lune, Londonderry Air, Schubert - Serenade, Thomas - The Ash Grove, and music by Glinka, Guridi, Ibert, Zabel, Godefroid and Salzedo and others, available at £12.00 plus £2.50 post and packing.
